The parent’s role is very
important. Some students practice willingly and consistently, without
parental involvement, but most students will need daily
reminders from their parents. Piano practice should not be
neglected, and should become an every day part of your child’s
life. Remind your child to practice. Ask them to play a song
for you. Ask them questions about their lessons. The more interested
you are in their progress, the better the results will be.
Consistent practice means, at least
once a day, the student has the time to forget about other commitments
and focus on the piano. The time will vary depending on the age
and abilities of the student. Do not force a certain ‘time
limit’ on your child. I focus on a goal-oriented method of
practice. The student should focus their attention on one particular
aspect of their assignment that they haven’t completed yet,
and make progress, however small it may be. Parents can be involved
by making sure there isn’t too much wasted time sitting at
the piano. Sit with the student, look at their assignment, and ask
them what they are working on. Be involved!
After every lesson, the parent
is sent a detailed email explaining
what we did in the lesson and what should be practiced during the
week. I am always available throughout the week to answer questions
you may have. If there is any confusion or frustation at practice
time, please let me know.
